Herb Gardens For Beginners – The Basics You Need To Know!

Whether you love to cook or just dabble in the kitchen, there is a lot of enjoyment to be gained from adding your own freshly picked herbs to your meals. If you have never investigated the joys of growing a herb garden before, here are a few things that you need to know so you can get started properly.

Depending on how much space you have available, you can either grow your herbs out in a plot in the back yard, or if space is limited you can grow them on pots on your balcony, or even containers on your windowsill. However, when you are debating which herbs to grow, do your research so you know what size they will grow to. Some can reach 4-6 feet in height so these will not thrive well if you are trying to grow them in pots.

Determining the right growing spot for your herbs will ultimately decide whether they will be successful or not. Location, location is the key! Check each herb to ascertain what type of growing conditions are ideal for it and find a spot that suits it best. Some herbs just love to sit in full sun every day, but they do not like hot heat over 90F. If you are located in an area where your summers exceed this heat temperature figure, chose to plant your herbs in places that will receive sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Alternatively, under a tree where they would receive filtered light would also be ideal. Either way you want to ensure that they receive four hours of sun daily.

Preparation of the soil is the next important part of your herb garden. If you are preparing an outdoor plot, use a large garden fork to turn over dirt that has not been disturbed for years. You want to ensure that water can properly drain away from the herbs and that your plants can adequately push down their roots into the soil. Add some compost to the top layer of the soil and mix it in properly so that the water drainage issue is addressed. This will also add fertilizer into the soil which will encourage your plants to grow.

Now that you have done all the preparation work, it is time to plant your herbs. Some plants need more room than others to grow so bear this in mind so that you don’t plant them too close together. For example, allow a one foot growing diameter for cilantro and chives, but three feet for rosemary and sage.

Now that your herb garden is planted, remember to water it regularly and then sit back and watch it grow. You will receive immense enjoyment each time you harvest herbs from your plants and add them to your cooking. Not only can you take pride in knowing that you grew them yourself, but you will also save the considerable cost of having to buy them at the supermarket. Take the time to investigate a herb garden for yourself and get planning today!

Planting Container Gardens

Container gardens are a good option for those who want to have a flower garden, but do not have the space for a flower bed. Container gardens are also good for those who may have the room for a regular flower bed, but want some flowers in other locations, such as a patio, or a corner of the yard away from a planting bed.

Obviously the first thing that you’ll need for a container garden is a container. Practically anything that will hold soil can be used as a container garden. You can choose something like a terra cotta flower pot or ceramic container that you can find at your local gardening store or you can choose something more unusual. If you want something unique, your options for containers are almost unlimited. Whatever container you choose, just be sure that it will drain water. A few holes drilled into the bottom should suffice.

A container garden can be used to add your own unique touch to your garden; you just have to choose a container that reflects your personality. For a slightly whimsical garden, you can use an old watering can for a container garden, or perhaps an old bowl and pitcher. For something even more unique, you can let your imagination run wild. A pair of boots, an old claw foot bathtub, or even a toilet can be turned into interesting container gardens.

Once you have your container, you need to fill it with soil, and start planting. You may want to put some landscaping fabric in the bottom of the container to prevent the drainage holes from getting clogged with soil. If your container is large, you may want to partially fill the container with empty water bottles, or Styrofoam peanuts, and then fill the rest of the container with soil. This will reduce the weight, and make it easier to move your container garden if you want it in a different location.

When choosing plants for your container garden, you can either choose plants with contrasting colors and textures, or plants with complimentary colors. Try to vary the size of the plants in the container. Plant something tall in the center of the container, or in the back of the container if it will be against a wall or a fence. In front of this, use a smaller plant for some variety. Along the edge of the container, use plants that will spill over the side. This three layered planting method provides some interest to the garden.

You don’t necessarily need to follow the planting instructions exactly. If you are using annuals in your container garden, you can pack them together, since they will not have the chance to grow and spread. Just give them some room to spread, but do not leave gaps.

A container garden is ideal for adding a touch of color to a corner of a patio or yard. You can even plant it several times a year, using different flowers for different growing seasons. With the right container, your garden can even reflect your own unique personality, making your garden your own.

How Gardening Saved My Life

Gardening was never a part of my life growing up. I lived in the middle of the city with stone and cement everywhere, so the most I knew about gardening had to do with the parks, meridians, and what the neighbors could cram onto their balconies. I remember one neighbor grew a single tomato plant on hers. She said she used them to make her own tomato sauce. As a child I didn’t understand the appeal.

As an adult I would soon find out. When I was about thirty I was diagnosed with chronic depression. For a long time I had felt like a dark cloud was hanging over me, daring me to join my dead ancestors beyond the grave. The doctors had no reasoning for this other than a chemical imbalance. What I never told any of them was about the abuse I had faced in a relationship, the death of family members, and a miscarriage all in one year. Talking about those things only made me more depressed.

I tried many things to feel better. Therapy, spa treatments, even going on vacation did nothing to lift the veil of horror from my eyes. Every day was a struggle to get up and go. I managed to get a new job, a new partner, and a new place to live in the suburbs, but I still didn’t feel like any of it was worth it.

Then one day I went for a walk and realized that I lived in a beautiful neighborhood. All of the lawns were full of colorful flowers, fresh vegetables, and even the occasional fruit bush or tree. I asked one neighbor pruning a rose bush how she got started. The next thing I knew, I was at a home improvement place looking to see how I could add some color and life to my own.

It was rocky going that first spring. I barely knew what I was doing, but my neighbors were helpful and showed me some tips I would never read in books. In time I began to see the literal fruit of my neighbors. Slowly, over the years, my garden grew in more ways than one.. With every plant I cultivated and seeded from the earth, a bit of that dark cloud disappeared over my head. It was like my plants were my guardian angels, trying to get me to survive.

My loved ones noticed the change as well. They commented that I seemed happier, brighter. I would take them veggies and bouquets of flowers that I cultivated myself. My sister said that she could feel my essence in a single dahlia. I believe her. I pour all of my frustrations, my fears and my regrets into every seed I plant. Those plants in turn use my negativity to fertilize themselves and grow into something beautiful. I truly believe that is what’s happening.

I don’t know if I would still be alive today if I never discovered gardening. It’s like the missing piece of my soul that was absconded one day when looking at my neighbor’s tomato plant. I now grow them in her honor.
